The 2026 Idaho Senior Games have wrapped up, medals have been awarded, and athletes across the state can celebrate months of training and competition. For some participants, however, crossing the finish line, completing the final match, or recording that last score wasn’t really the end. It was the beginning of something bigger. Athletes who qualified through the Idaho Senior Games may now have the opportunity to compete at the 2027 National Senior Games in Tulsa, Oklahoma, June 30 through July 11, 2027. With the national competition still months away, now is the perfect time to understand what comes next—and turn a successful Idaho Senior Games season into motivation for the year ahead.
First, Understand What Qualifying Means

The National Senior Games Association (NSGA) uses qualifying State Senior Games across the country as a pathway to the national competition. Qualification requirements vary by sport.
In many sports, the top four finishers in each age group qualify for Nationals. Certain sports use different placement requirements, while some athletes can also qualify by meeting Minimum Performance Standards. Road Race and Triathlon finishers qualify regardless of placement, while team sports have their own qualification requirements.
If you competed in the Idaho Senior Games and aren’t certain whether your performance qualified you for Nationals, don’t make assumptions based solely on whether you won a medal. Qualification rules vary, and meeting a performance standard can provide another pathway in applicable sports.
Mark October 22 on Your Calendar

One of the most important dates for qualified athletes comes much sooner than next summer.
Registration for the 2027 National Senior Games is scheduled to open October 22, 2026, at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. Qualified athletes won’t be able to register for their qualifying events until their State Senior Games results have been submitted to the NSGA and verified.
Early registration continues through March 23, 2027, with final registration scheduled to close April 21, 2027. However, waiting until the deadline may not make sense for everyone. Some sports and events have entry limits and could reach capacity during the registration period. Once registration opens and your qualification has been verified, completing the process early can give you one less thing to think about as you prepare for Tulsa.
Don’t Let the End of the Idaho Games End Your Training

Finishing a competition season naturally creates an opportunity to recover. After weeks or months of preparing for the Idaho Senior Games, taking some time to rest and enjoy what you accomplished can help both physically and mentally.
But Nationals also gives qualified athletes a tremendous reason to keep moving. Instead of viewing the months between Idaho and Tulsa as one long training season, consider breaking them into smaller goals. Fall might focus on maintaining conditioning and addressing areas you identified during competition. Winter can provide an opportunity to build strength, improve technique, or work on consistency. As spring approaches, training can gradually become more specific to your National Senior Games events.
The objective doesn’t necessarily have to involve winning a national medal. Setting a goal to improve a time, increase accuracy, build endurance, sharpen technique, or simply arrive in Tulsa feeling prepared can provide plenty of motivation.
Learn From What Happened at the Idaho Senior Games

Competition teaches lessons that practice can’t always duplicate. Maybe nerves affected your first few points of a match. Perhaps you discovered that your endurance wasn’t quite where you wanted it during a longer event. You might have performed better than expected and realized you’re capable of setting a more ambitious goal. Those observations become valuable information for the next stage of training. Rather than focusing only on your final placement, think about the entire competition. What worked? Where did you feel strongest? What would you change? Which skills could benefit from additional attention?
The Idaho Senior Games gave athletes an opportunity to test themselves in a competitive environment. Qualified athletes can now use that experience as a roadmap for Tulsa.
Nationals Isn’t Only for Athletes Who Qualified

Here’s something other Idaho athletes may not realize: several events at the 2027 National Senior Games don’t require qualification at all. The NSGA has designated a number of sports and events as open for 2027. They include options such as:
- Disc golf
- Bocce
- Cornhole
- Billiards
- Climbing
- Powerlifting
- Power Walk
- Basketball Shooting Skills
- Beach Volleyball
- Golf Scramble
- Flag Football
- 1-Mile Road Race
- Tai Chi
- Triathlon Relay
Additional open events include certain recumbent cycling and non-ambulatory pickleball competitions. That means not qualifying in your primary sport doesn’t necessarily close the door on Tulsa. It may even provide an opportunity to try something completely different. For athletes who did qualify, the open events can also make the National Senior Games experience even more interesting. Depending on scheduling and registration requirements, you may discover another event you’d like to add to your Tulsa adventure.
Start Thinking About the Trip

Tulsa may feel far away right now, but June 2027 will arrive faster than it seems. The National Senior Games bring athletes together from across the country, and the experience extends beyond competition. Participants meet people who share their passion for staying active, reconnect with friends from previous Games, support fellow competitors, and experience the energy of a large multisport event.
Qualified Idaho athletes may want to begin thinking about travel, lodging, competition schedules, and whether family or friends will join them. The NSGA has already published general and age-specific competition schedule information, although schedules remain subject to change and detailed event information will come later.
Planning ahead can help athletes focus more of their attention on competing once the Games arrive.
Keep the Momentum Going

One of the greatest things about the Senior Games movement is that competition doesn’t have to end at a particular age. Athletes 50 and older continue setting goals, trying new sports, developing friendships, improving their health, and discovering just how much they’re capable of accomplishing.
The Idaho Senior Games provide that opportunity close to home. For athletes who qualified in 2026, the National Senior Games offer the chance to take the next step. So celebrate what you accomplished this summer. Display the medal. Share the pictures. Thank the family members, friends, teammates, volunteers, and fellow competitors who helped make the Idaho Senior Games memorable. Then start looking forward.
Tulsa is next.
